Summer 2018 Mock DIRT (Music)

2. Explain one way in which music videos use media language to differ from each other. Refer to one example of contrasting media language in two music videos you have studies to support your answer.

MARKING:
This is not media language -
Media language is:
- Camera work
- Sound
- Editing
- Mise-en-scene

EDITED ANSWER:
The songs 'Sk8r Boi' and 'Teenage Dirtbag' both have contrasting points of view, as the diegetic sound in 'Sk8r Boi' is sung by the woman Avril Lavigne and the diegetic sound in 'Teenage Dirtbag' is sung by the primarily male band Wheatus, therefore 'Sk8r Boi' is from a female point of view while 'Teenage Dirtbag' is from a male point of view.

4. Refer to Extract 1 in the Insert. Analyse the representation of musicians in Extract 1, which is from the MOJO Magazine.

MARKING:
Talk about how
- Camera shot/angle
- Costume
- Text
also contributes to representation & link to how this also represents the audience.

EDITED ANSWER:
The MOJO magazine represents musicians as solemn and melancholic, particularly through the use of a monochromatic colour palette, which is primarily black and white with red and yellow present in the text. The colour black often connotes to depression and loneliness, so the abundance of the colour suggests this about musicians.

The cover photo is a low-angled close up of the musician Ray Davies looking towards the sky longingly, as though he were searching for something while lost in a state of loneliness, further suggesting the depression idea. However, there is the Stanley Hall theory that youth are not only depressed but also rebellious, which is supported by the fact that the camera angle is low, creating the impression that Davies is towering over us as though he has a much higher status due to a rebellious attitude. Therefore, musicians are represented as both depressed and rebellious.

5. Refer to Extracts 1 and 2 in the Insert.
How far is media language used differently in Extracts 1 and 2 to reflect genre conventions?
In your answer you must:
- Analyse examples oh how media language is used similarly and differently in Extracts 1 and 2, which are from We Love Pop and MOJO magazines
- Make judgements and reach conclusions about whether there are more similarities due to genre conventions than differences in the extracts.

MARKING:
LINK TO QUESTION NEEDED E.G. how does this follow genre conventions?
- Camera shots?
- Text?
Make sure you discuss all aspects of media language.

EDITED ANSWER:
In the MOJO magazine, media language is used to convey a much more mature and solemn feeling, primarily through the use of colour palette and layout, with a much more cleaner and tidier layout then the We Love Pop magazine and the colour palette being monochromatic primarily with black and white, with red and yellow present in the text, which represents the target audience of older men.

Media language varies much more in the We Love Pop magazine, which presents a more bubbly and feminine look compared to the MOJO magazine, which represents both the pop genre and the target audience of teenage girls. The colour palette is mostly pink with a bit of white and blue in other areas and the layout is much more cramped and cluttered compared to the MOJO magazine. (this answer isn't finished)
