Analysing Music Magazine Covers

Age: 16-25
Gender: Male
Social Grade: C2-D
Ethnicity: White
Interests: music, guitars, dark clothing and skinny jeans.

The masthead contains the word "Mojo" which is a short, snappy title that suits the classic rock genre, the word itself meaning a quality that attracts people to you; a magic charm. The font used is rather bold and simple to read, with a shadow underneath and a white colour to contrast against the background and to draw the audience's attention.

Containing a colour triad of the primary hues; red, yellow and blue, the palette highly saturated, which represents the bold style of rock well as they're all rather expressive, with connotations of every emotion - joy, sadness and anger - which have all been covered in rock songs. The bright colours also contrast well against the background and the other text, which makes it pop out and draws the audiences attention.

A cramped layout represents the heavy rock genre very well, alongside implying that the magazine is full of content, as theres so much on the cover. This attracts the audience as it gives the impression that the magazine is packed with content.

The main image is a medium close up of Dave Grohl, the lead singer of Foo Fighters, with a neutral expression, dark clothing and lighting slightly angled downwards from above him. This attracts the audience to him as he stands out well against the light background. His mise-en-scene fits the genre, especially the dark clothing and long hair, which also represents the target audience as well as fitting the rock stereotype.  The only other images present are the album cover for Teen Spirit and a small image of a man in the upper corner, which represent the audience but don't draw the attention away from the image of Dave Grohl.

All of the images on this cover are teasers that hint at the content inside of the magazine. The language used is informal and simple, such as "The Weird World Of SPARKS" and "ELVIS The Last Mystery", which suits the audience as they're simple people who most likely wouldn't enjoy reading a sophisticated piece. There is little punctuation used, but the few examples include exclamation marks. There is also a barcode in the corner, which is small enough to not drive the audience's attention away from the rest of the magazine.

  1. Some solid analysis (a good first draft on an essay like this) to get this up into the higher levels you just need to add more detail and theory. Targets:
    1) Masthead: say what the word 'Mojo' means and explain why this fits the genre and attracts the target audience. Explain in more detail why the font style works for males/females 24+ in the target audience.
    2) Colour pallet: talk about the colour connotations e.g. red could connote; violence, passion and danger then explain why these connotations work for the genre (think if they fit song narratives/lyrics/themes) and the target audience.
    3) Image/mise-en-scene: use the term mise-en-scene and explain why the choice of star vehicle and his appearance (age, beard, clothing etc.) fit the genre and represent the target audience.
